SUMMARY:Sacred Ecstasy in Sufism and Hasidic-Judaism
DESCRIPTION:This weekend retreat will provide an experiential spiritual exploration into the inner workings of devotional ecstatic Hasidic-Hebrew music and dance\, and the Sufi practices of moving prayer-mediation ritual. SUMMARY:Yuval Ron Ensemble Celebrating World Cultures & Earth's Shared Resources
DESCRIPTION:GLOBAL CURRENTS Festival Presents:\n Yuval Ron Ensemble Celebrating World Cultures & Earth’s Shared Resources \nwith\n\nBrazil — Ballet Folclorico do Brasil\n\n\nWest Africa — Futa Toro West African Drummers & Dancers\n\n\nHawaii — Halau Keali’i O Nalani\n\n\nMexico — Las Colibri\n\n\nJapan — On Ensemble\n\n\nMiddle East — Yuval Ron Ensemble\n\nSpecial appearance by The Nile Project with L.A. ensemble master artists \nBased upon the ancient water ritual of the Israelite tribes in Jerusalem\, the Yuval Ron Ensemble presents a program of sacred Hebrew prayers for bringing rain\, pilgrimage songs and ecstatic tribal music and dance.  The origins of the ritual goes back thousands of years to a regular annual festival that took place every autumn in the capital of the ancient Israeli kingdom. Themes of forgiveness\, redemption\, engaging with the water and the earth below in order to stimulate the water of the higher world were interwoven in this ritual which ended with intense joyful celebration \n\nWater is life. It sustains us\, and everything around us. It’s the original “highway\,” linking us together. And it inspires us—the subject of poems\, songs and dances. \nVPAC celebrates water on February 25. A daytime performance festival in the VPAC Courtyard features six Los Angeles ensembles with origins in six regions of the world. These traditional artists have one thing in common — music and dance that honors and evokes water. \nVPAC honors arts and culture from around the globe\, and uplifts the artists who honor what is most elemental to all of us — H2O. \n\nAdmission: Free \n\nLocation: Valley Performing Arts Center\, Great Hall: 18111 Nordhoff Street\, Northridge\, CA 91330-8448 \n\nFor tickets and more info: Phone: (818) 677-8800  \n\n\nwebpage: http://www.valleyperformingartscenter.org/calendar/details/global-currents

How are traditions changing\, both in context and out of context…or in “new” contexts? How can “outsiders” learn and honor dance and music techniques and traditions\, with respect? Are there elements of sacred traditions that are embedded in their practice\, engendering particular experiences regardless of your relation to the culture’s spirituality? This discussion of arts\, ethics\, spirituality\, and virtuosity will be fascinating and far-reaching…bring your questions!
